What a crazy two days…
48 hours ago, we boarded a bus in Egirdir, Turkey after a phenomenal hike up into the hills above the town. I’m not a huge fan of the overnight bus, but it gets you where you need to go for not much money in Turkey. We arrived early yesterday morning in Istanbul, but didn’t have enough time to see any more sights because of a flight later that day.
Last night was spent in Riga, Latvia. Air Baltic had a great price for their Istanbul to Tashkent flight… the kicker was that it involved a 6 hour layover in Riga. That was just enough time to go through customs, take a bus into town, explore and have dinner before hopping on our flight to Tashkent. Perfect!
Riga was incredible. The bus dropped us off right near the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We luckily stumbled onto the tourist office and got a great map that led us around to all the sights. We saw beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, the city’s farmer’s market that is held in old zeppelin hangars, St. Peter’s Church, and fantastic old buildings. It’s definitely a town we’d like to see again.
Then it was back to the airport for our overnight flight to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. We wandered around town today (Mark will share briefly about that) bleary-eyed and sleep deprived. Sorry to keep this entry so short – after a good night’s sleep tonight, we’ll be back online and I’ll get a bunch of pics up!
